Biography - who we are
Press Reviews - what they saying Gathering one of the largest fan bases in the Murfreesboro area, SkyHi’s odyssey to bring their enlightened soul/funk/R&B grooves upon their loyal followers has made them one of the best live acts in town. Their self-titled work, SkyHi, delivers enthusiastic, inspiring soul, and translates their live sound into a well-rounded 16-song album. Blending together their rich sound with smooth transitions and densely-layered progressions, SkyHi has come close to reaching its brilliant live sound in this studio production. Pulling together a true eclectic sound reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Graham Central Station and Parliament, SkyHi has managed to expose true enthusiasm for funky grooves and rhythmic intensity. The overall feeling of the album is full of smooth, funk styles layered with soul groove and pop hooks. Although it is hard to deliver the pure live sound of the stage into the studio without actually recording the band live in front of a crowd, the album still represents the band well, giving the listener a full, rich sound. The songs show impressive craftsmanship and musicianship, and although the lyrics may not exactly be poetic, the words deliver a powerful, deep message that works well within this musical genre. Although this music is not the most original, progressive sound of today, it still breathes life into a Southern area filled with Southern rock and blues sounds, filling a necessary musical void in the urfreesboro scene. Although this album displays a very nostalgic sound, it still delivers passion and taste contributing heart, soul and artistic expression to their musical stylings. Bring on the funk. -Jeff Russell Tennessee Soul in N.C. Last month in Boone, North Carolina The Village Idiot had the opportunity to get a glimpse of what Tennessee has to offer and it was really rewarding. Ski Hi's funky, smooth sounding music had the crowd really getting into the groove. The lead singer, Dee Adams, was exceptional and really mixed in well with the brass section. Look for their new album and future dates in Boone. -Rob Moore "Godfathers of Funk Strike Again (Ladies Beware: The Funkmasters are Addicted)" Being a SkyHi fan isn't a casual sort of thing. It's an awfully personal gig. The guys announce birthdays, graduations, or just plain shout out to their fans at every show, since SkyHi is on a first name basis with about half of Murfreesboro. By the end of the set, SkyHi's stage is covered with funky souls, usually highly attractive women dancing their asses off and singing along with the band. Dee croons and loyal fans at least four rows thick cut whatever they can get their feet on. "By the end of the night their were 20 beautiful ladies on stage dancing," Dee says with a mischievous smile. "We're not addicted to drugs, we're addicted to ladies. Watch out, we're addicted to you, too." It's hard to watch SkyHi live and avoid falling in love with them all. This show is one big give and take session of funky good times, punctuated with lots of love. Whatever you do, don't miss the next show, your dancing shoes will thank you. -Valerie Nutt SkyHi is a local funk band that mixes the music of Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Outkast and Parliament to create fresh music new to the Middle Tennessee area. SkyHi's concert at Bluesboro last Thursday was a non-stop, energetic show that featured everything from the Meters' "Cissy Strut" to ZZ Top's "Cheap Sunglasses." Dee's performance of James Brown's "Sex Machine" was bold and sexy. Timmerman's rap solos were clear and innovative. Captain Fantabulous' and Hawkins' beats were raw and funky. "Captain Friggum's Funk" is SkyHi's best original song and features amazing sax solos from Heffron nd Timmerman. -Staff |
